How Does A Laser Ranging Device Work?

  • The laser component is driven by the control and information processing circuit to emit laser pulses, which are sent out to the measured target through the transmitting antenna of the optical system.

  • The laser beams reflected by the measured target passes through the receiving antenna of the optical system, converges to the photodetector, and is converted into an electrical signal.

  • The control and information processing circuit processes the emitted laser pulse signal and the reflected laser pulse signal to calculate the distance information of the measured target, which is transmitted to the host computer through the communication interface to complete the laser ranging.




GPS vs. Laser Rangefinder

  • GPS is a satellite-based navigation system that determines the precise location of any point on Earth by receiving signals from multiple satellites. GPS devices are widely used in car navigation, smartphones, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and outdoor adventures. The main advantage of GPS is its wide coverage, providing positioning services globally. However, GPS can experience signal interference in certain environments, such as urban areas with tall buildings, dense forests, or underground locations, leading to reduced positioning accuracy.

  • Laser rangefinders, on the other hand, use laser beams to measure the distance to a target object. By emitting a laser and measuring the time it takes for the reflection to return, laser rangefinders can quickly and accurately calculate the distance to the target. These laser ranging devices are commonly used in construction, topographic surveying, military measurements, and golf. The primary advantage of laser distance measurement equipment is its high measurement accuracy, especially suitable for short distances and tasks requiring high precision. However, the measurement range of the high precision laser distance sensor is limited, typically only working within the line of sight, and their performance can be affected by adverse weather conditions such as fog or heavy rain.
